I would never in a million years thought that I would ever label myself a morning person! And I am pretty sure my Mum, Dad, Brother and also Curly would totally have agreed with that statement!
But in the last year, working from home, I can hand on heart say I try to approach each morning positively, upbeat, awake and ready to hit the day. To be honest, having a morning routine really helps with this, and this I have been working on for the last 2 years! Also having a puppy….as much as I would love him to doesn’t have a snooze button, so when Denzel is ready to get up, boy do I know about it!
So whilst before I started working from home I had a full on job in the city, which meant I had to get up early every morning. Setting the alarm at 5am most days, I would be so sleepy, feel lazy and sluggish and just generally pretty grumpy and not too nice to be around in the mornings. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I am perfect in the mornings now, and I definitely have some off days, but now I feel much happy in the mornings.
I’m definitely a night owl, working till late into the night and I don’t go to bed most evenings till after 11pm, which is something I am really trying to work on to make my mornings that little it easier. So here are just a couple of things that I have found have helped me become more of a morning person.
1, Don’t set your alarm earlier than necessary! I don’t know about you but alot of the time I don’t need to get up 3 hours earlier than I need to. For such a long time I felt guilty if I wasn’t up by 6am! Well that’s crazy! I know that if I allow myself an extra half an hour, maybe even an hours sleep, that can make all the difference! And if I know I need to be up at the crack of dawn, then I definitely make sure I head to bed earlier.
2, Have a routine! So for me, the first thing I do once I am up is wash my face, head downstairs to let Denzel out and have a glass of water. This never used to happen, I used to sort of roll out of bed and have a cup of tea, but I know that if I start my day off on the right foot it goes so much better! I am trying to nail not reading my emails and social media straight away and wait for a couple of hours after I have woken up, but I think that one is going to take some time.
3, Make sure you eat something! I never used to eat breakfast, would always skip it and now thinking back on it I wonder if that contributed to me being so flippin’ grumpy in the mornings. Now I make sure I have something before I start work. I feel I should definitely eat healthier breakfasts (new years resolution?) but sometimes I can’t stomach a full meal, or I am rushing and think its better to eat something than not at all. Usually I will have porridge, or scrambled egg on toast, or if I am in a rush just some toast, a bowl of cereal, or even just a piece of fruit.
I would love to know if you have any tips on being a morning person? I recently started reading a book called the Miracle Morning! Its brilliant so far, and will fill you in once I have finished but the backbone so far is having routine and starting your morning with intention – and having put some of these things into practise, I can definitely see the benefit!
Much love, Charlotte x
