Anyone who has been following my blog for a little while, or knows me as a person, will know how much I love being by the sea. Growing up on the coast, having weekly visits to the beach was something that I really took for granted, and it wasn’t until I moved to the city that I realise how incredible being by the sea really is. When I moved back to the Coast in October 2015, I made a promise to myself to spend as much time at the beach as possible. There is something about the smell of the beach, the calmness, the sea air, that I feel is really good for the soul.
With a bit of a low couple of weeks at the the start of April, a weekend away in Camber Sands was just the perfect opportunity to get away and have some proper time out at the beach. We stayed in a beautiful coastguard cottage, seconds away from the waters edge! Literally standing at the water’s edge with the sea spraying in my hair because it was so windy! Which was a super plus point for my fiancé, as he is an avid kitesurfer!
With my love of candles (literally too many in each of the rooms in our house!) when I was contacted by Yankee Candle to work with them on their new range Coastal Living Candles, I was too excited! Combining 2 of my favourites things, (candles and the coast) I felt that this was the perfect project to be involved in and share with you all!
There is something about having some time out from your normal day to help clear your head. It was so nice to spend a couple of days away in a new place. We have never been to Camber Sands before, and we love exploring new places and having weekend adventures. Camber has the most incredible beach, it reminds me of the beaches in Cornwall and Devon with the vast stretches of sand, and this beach leads all around the Rye Bay area. Sadly the weather wasn’t great whilst we were there, so there wasn’t much exploring the Sand Dunes, or out about in the local towns, but it was nice to get some R&R and have some peace and quiet by the sea and not have to rush – I mean even living by the coast now, life still gets busy, so it was nice to be able to switch off and not have to rush around – I highly recommend everyone do this once and a while!
The Airbnb cottage we stayed in, well coastal is the perfect definition for this place. Literally a minutes walk away from the sea edge, it was impeccably styled, and I had totally interior envy. Embracing the rustic coastal vibe, it was the perfect retreat space! Away from all the noise, with sea views from the house, less than 5 minutes away from the Kitesurfing beach, it was everything we would have been looking for in a break away from the city.
It has been said, that candles are scientifically proven to soothe us. I light candles everyday, and I feel it really sets the tone and mood for the environment I am trying to create in my home – gentle, calming and relaxing. And I really truly feel that scented candles can totally change your mood and how you are feeling.
My favourite candles are ones that smell incredible when they aren’t been burnt, whilst they are lit and the smell after you blow it out. Maybe I am a hard one to please when it comes to candles, but I think its such a shame when a candle smells incredible, and then you burn it and get no scent at all! We all have our trigger scents, scents that make us feel good, remember a memory or a place we have been and these candles for me did just that! Bringing the essence of the coast into my own home through a candle – oh my goodness, heaven! And Yankee Candle’s new Coastal Living range fitted that perfectly!
The Sea Air candle for me, is the perfect scent in the bathroom, whilst getting ready in the morning or whilst having relaxing in the bath. It’s my favourite scent out of the whole collection, it literally smells like they have perfectly bottled up the smell of the beach. The Driftwood fragrance was my fiancé’s favourite. The perfect scent for the main living space in your home, it has that sea, weather-worn wood smell that fills up in your home, creating that warming feeling for me which completely encompassed the smells from our coastal retreat in Camber Sands.
The Garden By The Sea, the perfect Spring, Summer candle – a fresh, floral scent which I totally adore! It reminds me of the smell of the clifftops in Cornwall sitting down amongst the oceanside blooms. This one I could imagine burning whilst enjoying an al-fresco dinner party, being the perfect background scent. Also I love the colour! Having a bright candle in the house is a must!
The Coastal Living candle, a salty sweet scent with mid tones of Lavender and Marine Flowers – in my opinion the perfect candle for the bedroom. Taking me back to my happy place, the name is perfectly fitting for the fragrance of this candle. Bottling up the seas salt smell, the sand, the warm ocean breeze – coastal living to a tee!
All in all, the whole range recreates the coastal experience all bottled up within my favourite brand of candles. I burn and try alot of candle brands, but I always come back to using the fragrances by Yankee Candle. Such a good quality scented candle with amazing burn time – which when I burn candles everyday, is ideal! If you haven’t already and want your house to smell like the perfect coastal retreat and bring that spring time, beach vibe into your home, I would really recommend this range! You can see more about the range here >> YANKEE CANDLE COASTAL LIVING They also have some incredible accessories and look books on how to create the coastal vibe in your home.
I really hope you enjoyed this article. I would love for you to comment below if you also share a love for candles and which are your favourites!
Much love, Charlotte
