What would you think if I told you I deleted my entire to-do list at the end of the year!
If you are anything like me you have an array of notebooks in your office, several list on notes on your phone, your project planner wherever of a load of to-do lists, a few post-it notes on your desk, things you either want to achieve today, tomorrow, 5 years from now. Big plans and projects, to-dos that seem super super important, but actually when you sit down and think about it, in the grand scheme of things, are NOT going to move your business forward!
When reviewing my year and progress in 2018, and the things I had been avoiding in 2018, I realised a lot of it didn’t light me up. It didn’t excite me about my business. I felt like I was working more IN my business, than ON my business, client work was the priority, but everything after that, nothing! I would sit down to do tasks that I had set myself, I would draw a blank, feel exhausted and like I didn’t have the energy to do it.
So I decided to scrap the entire lists – all 50 of them! I’m joking, I don’t actually think I have 50 to-lists, but it was a lot. I like to write things down as soon as they come to mind as I can easily forget tasks and ideas that crop up unless I start working on them straight away.
But I decided to start the New Year with a fresh slate. I took the time to really dream about my year ahead, how did I want it to be different to last year, what do I love working on and doing, what do I want to do more of, what can I work on this year that will put me outside of my comfort zone.
And not surprisingly that totally lit me up, made me super excited and cut out all the rubbish that I didn’t really need to do and wasn’t bothered about doing!
So I brainstormed, dreamed big and wrote a brand new, concise list of things I really wanted to work on and I couldn’t be more excited.
Hitting the ground running is a term that was always mentioned in my corporate job – I kind of hate and love this statement all at the same time. But however you want to define that term, heading into your week, whether it is at the start of the year, start of the week month, or even the last day of the week – just cracking on with the to-do list, a list that excites you and is going to move your business forward will help the action!
Action is definitely the key to success, and will help you get out of a place of inaction.
Starting new habits – like me, I am blogging every day! I am not necessarily posting/publishing every day, but the action of writing a blog post everyday, will help me get out of the inaction I had surrounding my blog and website.
What can you do today to get re-excited about your to-do list? What can you do today to take action that will move your business forward?
Comment below, I would love to hear what you are planning!
Love, Charlotte
